Switching OSHC: continuity, waiting periods and refunds

Compare a replacement OSHC policy, confirm waiting-period recognition and cover dates, then request cancellation and a refund with the right evidence.

01

Compare the remaining cover period

Use the same people and required dates when comparing your current policy with a replacement. Review the premium, medical network, benefits and limits. Include any cancellation or refund fees in the comparison, and request a formal quote rather than relying on an annual reference price.

02

Confirm how waiting periods transfer

Ask the new insurer which waiting periods it recognises and what evidence it needs. Request a transfer or clearance certificate from your current insurer. Recognition depends on the previous cover, continuity and the new policy; extra or upgraded benefits may have their own waits. An insurer’s transfer tolerance does not give permission to leave a gap in visa-required cover.

03

Arrange the new cover before cancelling

Confirm the replacement’s eligibility, start date and certificate first. Coordinate the old policy’s final covered day and the new policy’s first covered day with both insurers so there is no uninsured day. Keep written confirmation; do not assume the new insurer has cancelled your old policy.

04

Apply for cancellation and any refund

Submit the old insurer’s cancellation or refund form with the replacement certificate and any other evidence it requests. Refund eligibility, calculation, minimum periods and fees differ by insurer and product. Ask for the expected amount and cancellation date; unused premiums are not universally refunded by the day.

05

Check the result and your records

Keep both certificates, the transfer record, cancellation confirmation and refund statement. Check any recurring payment arrangements with the old insurer and verify the new membership details. If a claim is still being processed, ask the relevant insurer how to follow it up.

06

If your visa changes after study

Switching OSHC providers and moving to OVHC are different changes. Graduation alone does not settle product eligibility or the changeover date. Check your visa status with the insurer before cancelling student cover, and use our 485 transition guide when planning graduate-visa insurance.
