01
Check each person’s visa and eligibility
Student-visa applicants and accompanying family members generally need OSHC unless a relevant exemption applies. Confirm the requirements for each person. Visiting parents and guardians may hold different visas and need different products; do not assume they can be added as student dependants.
02
Choose the right membership category
Check the insurer’s definitions of single, couple, dual-family and multi-family cover. For example, Allianz describes dual-family cover as the student plus a partner or dependant children; multi-family includes the student, partner and dependant children. Names and eligibility rules need checking for each insurer. A family premium cannot be calculated by multiplying a single premium.
03
Compare more than the total premium
Request quotes with the same eligible family members and dates. Check medical and hospital benefits, pharmacy limits per person and per membership, waiting periods and likely gap fees. The cheapest single policy is not necessarily the cheapest family policy. Online AUOSHC prices currently cover single membership; request a separate couple or family quote.
04
Plan pregnancy and newborn cover early
Confirm pregnancy and birth benefits, waiting periods and the hospital’s expected fees before planned treatment. Ask how and when a newborn must be added, whether a membership upgrade is required and which documents are needed. Family cover does not automatically remove waiting periods; do not rely on another insurer’s deadline or exception.
05
Coordinate different arrival dates
If your partner or children arrive later, tell the insurer their dates and ask when the membership change should start. Check every person’s name, date of birth and cover period on the issued documents. Ask about the effect of a child reaching the policy’s dependant age limit or other family changes.
06
Prepare a personalised quote request
Email info@auoshc.com with the visa types, number of adults and children, ages, planned arrival and cover dates, and any current cover. We can help request the appropriate quote. Provide passports and other sensitive documents only through the application channel when requested.
